This is, quite possibly, the most top of the line coffee maker you could purchase. Handmade and produced in the Netherlands, the Technivorm Moccamaster is specifically designed for those who really love coffee; specifically, micro roasters or single-origin blends.
It looks like a coffee maker you’d see in a diner; it’s big, heavy, and has a bright light reminiscent of a Mr. Koffee maker. However, this isn’t going to give you an average cup of joe. The Moccamaser is crafted to heat the water within between 195 and 205 degrees, the ideal temperature for extracting the most flavors possible from the grounds (many coffee makers don’t even hit the 185 mark).
The design of the Moccamaser hasn’t changed since the 1970s. It carries a distinct, interesting aesthetic that will surely be a focal point in your kitchen. The beauty of this brewer isn’t just on the outside, however. It has been awarded by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, the European Coffee Brewing Centre, and the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe. That’s a tall order for a humble coffee brewer!
The Moccamaster comes in three styles: an 8-cup thermal carafe, a 10-cup thermal carafe, and an 8-cup glass carafe with a built-in heated warming plate.
Besides the fact that the water brews at a perfect 200 degrees, another feature that distinguishes the Moccamaster from other coffee makers is the shower head that disperses the water over the grounds. This ensures that every ground will be covered in water, thus giving you the best cup possible.
The thermal carafes are double insulted to retain every bit of heat possible. Reviews vary, saying that they keep coffee hot for up to 5 hours and as little as 45 minutes. It is helpful to run hot water inside the carafe before brewing as this preheats the material and gives a boost to the heat retention of the carafe. An added bonus is the screw on lid to help hold in heat even more, a features that most other coffee makers do not have.
The glass carafe does its own to hold in heat. The hot plate maintains a controlled temperature of around 175 degrees, perfect for warming your coffee.
The filter baskets have a ribbed design to better funnel the coffee into the pot. As a neat extra feature, the thermal carafes can be turned with a flick of a switch to change the brew to either open, half open, or off. This can tweak the immersion time of the grounds while brewing in case you want a stronger brew, or completely stop the process for a moment so you can pour yourself a cup in the middle of the brewing process.
Things to Consider
If you’re thinking about buying any of Moccamaster’s models, consider purchasing a grinder beforehand. If you’re going to invest in a state of the art coffee maker, you might as well make sure you’re using the highest quality grounds, or else there’s really no point in making that kind of purchase. If you buy a grinder, don’t buy one with metal blades, get one with a quality burr grinder. This will ensure the beans are ground in a consistent fashion and filter the water much better.
Buying a coffee maker designed specifically for tasting the nuances in flavor in your coffee is awesome, but if you’re sticking with pre-ground beans or buying anything besides small-batch coffee, this may not be the machine for you. Moccamaster coffee brewers really are for those who love to taste the differences in blends. If you don’t drink black coffee, then think about buying something less expensive.
Technivorm Moccamaser’s are amazing coffee makers for those who are fanatic about coffee. It works best for beans ground a little coarser than normal (think French press or something along those lines). It takes about 6 minutes to brew a full pot of coffee; pretty quick by any standard.
This machine is super easy to clean. Every three months (or 100 brews) you should run a descaling agent through the system, which can be purchased online or in store. The parts come off easily and can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher (though it’s not recommended to do the latter).
It’s extremely intuitive, just scoop the grounds in the filter, flip the switch, and let it brew. The Moccamaster proves that just because a machine can make top-notch coffee, doesn’t mean it has to be hard to make.
