It looks like a coffee maker you’d see in a diner; it’s big, heavy, and has a bright light reminiscent of a Mr. Koffee maker. However, this isn’t going to give you an average cup of joe. The Moccamaser is crafted to heat the water within between 195 and 205 degrees, the ideal temperature for extracting the most flavors possible from the grounds (many coffee makers don’t even hit the 185 mark).
The design of the Moccamaser hasn’t changed since the 1970s. It carries a distinct, interesting aesthetic that will surely be a focal point in your kitchen. The thermal carafes are double insulted to retain every bit of heat possible. Reviews vary, saying that they keep coffee hot for up to 5 hours and as little as 45 minutes. If you buy a grinder, don’t buy one with metal blades, get one with a quality burr grinder. This will ensure the beans are ground in a consistent fashion and filter the water much better.
Buying a coffee maker designed specifically for tasting the nuances in flavor in your coffee is awesome, but if you’re sticking with pre-ground beans or buying anything besides small-batch coffee, this may not be the machine for you. Moccamaster coffee brewers really are for those who love to taste the differences in blends. If you don’t drink black coffee, then think about buying something less expensive.
Technivorm Moccamaser’s are amazing coffee makers for those who are fanatic about coffee. It works best for beans ground a little coarser than normal (think French press or something along those lines). It takes about 6 minutes to brew a full pot of coffee; pretty quick by any standard.
This machine is super easy to clean. Every three months (or 100 brews) you should run a descaling agent through the system, which can be purchased online or in store. The parts come off easily and can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher (though it’s not recommended to do the latter).
It’s extremely intuitive, just scoop the grounds in the filter, flip the switch, and let it brew. The Moccamaster proves that just because a machine can make top-notch coffee, doesn’t mean it has to be hard to make.
